For most short Vietnam holidays, flying is the practical way to move from Ha Long Bay to Ho Chi Minh City. The important decision is not simply “flight or train”, but which airport fits your cruise disembarkation time and the rest of the route. Van Don (VDO) can reduce the ground transfer when a direct VDO → SGN flight operates at a useful time. Cat Bi in Hai Phong (HPH) usually gives more schedule choice. Hanoi (HAN) becomes relevant when your trip already returns to Hanoi or the northern flight options do not fit.
Choose the airport before comparing fares
| Route | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ha Long → VDO → SGN | A direct VDO–SGN flight operates after your cruise and the timing is comfortable | Less ground travel, but fewer flight choices than a larger airport |
| Ha Long → HPH → SGN | You want more nonstop schedule options and the longer road transfer still fits | More ground travel before the flight |
| Ha Long → HAN → SGN | Your itinerary already returns to Hanoi or VDO/HPH timing is poor | Longest airport transfer from Ha Long, but broad flight choice |
| Ha Long → Hanoi → train → Saigon | The long rail journey itself is part of the holiday | Uses well over a day and a night in transit |
If you are still deciding whether Ho Chi Minh City belongs after the North at all, use the Hanoi vs Ho Chi Minh City route comparison. This page assumes the north-to-south move is already fixed.
Van Don: shortest ground connection when the flight time works
Van Don International Airport (VDO) is the first airport to check after a Ha Long stay because it serves Quang Ninh and currently has nonstop service to Ho Chi Minh City. Current schedules put the VDO → SGN flight at roughly 2 hours 10–20 minutes, but frequency is limited enough that you should build the decision around the actual departure on your date rather than assuming a daily timetable.
This option is strongest when your cruise disembarks with a comfortable buffer before the flight. Do not book a tight cruise-to-airport connection just because VDO is geographically closer: disembarkation, luggage, road conditions and airline check-in still need time.
Cat Bi: more flight choice, but more road time
Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) in Hai Phong has frequent nonstop service to Ho Chi Minh City, with current direct flight times around 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes. It is useful when the VDO departure does not fit your cruise day or when you want more choice of departure time.
The trade-off is simple: HPH normally means more time on the road before you fly. Compare the complete transfer from your cruise port or Ha Long hotel to your Ho Chi Minh City hotel, not only the airborne time.
When does Hanoi Airport make sense?
Noi Bai (HAN) is not the first airport we would choose for a simple Ha Long → Ho Chi Minh City transfer because it adds a longer ground sector. It becomes logical when your itinerary already returns to Hanoi, you have another Hanoi activity or hotel night, or the VDO/HPH schedules do not fit.
For the broader flight decision inside Vietnam, use the domestic flights in Vietnam guide. Keep this page focused on the Ha Long departure problem rather than comparing every airline or fare family.
Train: choose it only when the journey itself matters
There is no through Ha Long → Ho Chi Minh City railway journey. You first need to reach Hanoi, then board a southbound train. The current Vietnam Railways timetable puts Hanoi → Saigon services at roughly 32 hours 45 minutes to 38 hours 30 minutes, depending on the train. Add the Ha Long → Hanoi transfer and waiting time on top of that.
A sleeper berth can make the journey more manageable, but the train should be chosen because you want a long rail experience or because the timetable solves a specific itinerary problem. It is not a time-saving alternative to flying.
What about a long-distance sleeper bus?
Bus routes and operator patterns change, and a journey of this length can involve a very long overnight sector or a transfer even when a booking site presents it as one itinerary. For most first-time visitors, families and travellers protecting holiday time, we would not make bus the default.
If budget is the main reason you are considering road travel, compare the complete journey: pickup location, vehicle type, operator reviews, transfer points, arrival time and what the following day in Ho Chi Minh City will feel like after the trip.
Do not add Ninh Binh just to break the transfer
Ninh Binh can be a strong destination, but adding it only as a “stopover” between Ha Long and Ho Chi Minh City changes the itinerary rather than simplifying the transfer. Add Ninh Binh when you genuinely want its landscape and heritage; otherwise move directly to the airport that best fits the cruise day.
Cruise day timing matters more than the cheapest ticket
| Check before booking | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cruise disembarkation time and port | Determines how much road buffer you actually have |
| VDO / HPH / HAN departure time | The geographically closest airport is not useful if the flight timing is poor |
| Checked baggage and fare conditions | Headline fares do not show the full cost for every traveller |
| Ho Chi Minh City hotel arrival time | A late arrival can remove most of the first southern evening |
| Weather / cruise delay buffer | A rigid same-day connection carries more risk than a comfortable one |
For what to do after arrival, continue with the Ho Chi Minh City travel guide. If you are still planning the northern side, use the Ha Long Bay travel guide rather than adding unrelated transport links here.
Our planning rule
Check VDO first because it can minimise the ground transfer, then compare HPH when you need more departure choices. Use HAN when the route already returns to Hanoi. Choose the train only when the long rail journey is part of the experience.
Already know your cruise date and Ho Chi Minh City hotel dates? Send the cruise disembarkation details, group size and luggage plan so the airport and connection can be checked against the actual route.
