Chasing waterfalls in paradise – A guide to the best Phu Quoc Waterfall

The most critical factor for any visitor planning to see a Phu Quoc waterfall is the season. The island’s primary attractions, Suoi Tranh and Suoi Da Ban, are entirely dependent on rainfall, meaning they are impressive during the rainy season (roughly May to October) but can be disappointingly dry during the peak tourist months. This guide provides a practical breakdown of each waterfall and what to expect.

Phu Quoc waterfalls – top places that nature lovers should not miss out on

The most important tip for visiting any Phu Quoc Waterfall

Before we talk about any specific waterfall, we must share the most critical piece of advice with you. The beauty of our waterfalls depends 100% on the season.

  • The rainy season (May to October): This is when our waterfalls are at their absolute best! The rains feed the streams, creating beautiful, flowing cascades. The jungle is incredibly lush and green, and the air is fresh and cool. This is the magical time to visit.
  • The dry season (November to April): Please listen carefully to this part. During the peak tourist season, when the weather is perfect for the beach, there is very little rain. This means the waterfalls can slow to a small trickle, or sometimes, be completely dry.

So, if you are visiting in the rainy season, a waterfall trip is a must-do. If you are visiting in the dry season, it can still be a lovely nature walk, but please manage your expectations and don’t expect a powerful, gushing cascade.

Now, let’s explore the main waterfalls on island!

Suoi Tranh Waterfall – the most popular Phu Quoc Waterfall for families

If you are looking for an easy, beautiful, and family-friendly nature escape, Suoi Tranh Waterfall is the perfect choice for you. It’s the most famous and accessible waterfall on the island.

Suoi Tranh Waterfall is a popular attraction on the pearl island

The vibe and  experience

From the entrance, you will take a gentle, 15-minute walk along a beautiful stone path that winds through the lush jungle. You’ll be surrounded by ancient trees, colourful flowers, and the sounds of the forest. The walk itself is a lovely experience. At the end, you will arrive at a series of gentle, cascading rock formations with pools of cool, clear water at the bottom.

What to do

  • Take a refreshing dip: The pools are generally shallow and safe, making them perfect for a refreshing swim or just dipping your feet in to cool off.
  • Enjoy a picnic: It’s a wonderful spot to bring some snacks and drinks and have a small family picnic on the rocks.
  • Take beautiful photos: The combination of the green forest, dark rocks, and clear water makes for beautiful, natural photographs.

Who it’s for

This is our top recommendation for families with children, couples looking for a romantic and easy walk, and anyone who just wants a simple, relaxing dose of nature without a difficult hike.

Practical information

  • Location: It’s located about 10 kilometers east of Duong Dong town, making it very easy to get to.
  • How to get there: A taxi or grab is the easiest way. It’s also a simple ride on a scooter.
  • Entrance fee: There is a small entrance fee, usually around 20,000 VND per person (about ₹70).

Da Ban Waterfall – For the more adventurous spirit

Visitors can enjoy the poetic natural scenery and fresh air at Da Ban Waterfall

If you found Suoi Tranh a little too “tame” and you’re looking for something more rustic and wild, then Suoi Da Ban Waterfall is your destination. The name translates to “Stream of Stone Tables” which perfectly describes it.

The vibe and  experience

Unlike the gentle cascades of Suoi Tranh, Suoi Da Ban is a series of large, flat granite rocks over which the stream flows. It feels more like an adventure. You will need to walk and climb over these large boulders to find your own perfect spot. The path to get there is a bit more rugged, but that’s part of the fun!

What to do

  • Rock hopping: Carefully make your way up the stream by hopping from one giant stone table to another.
  • Find your private pool: There are many small, natural pools of water hidden amongst the rocks. You can often find a secluded spot all to yourself.
  • Sunbathe on the rocks: The large, flat rocks are perfect for lying down, relaxing, and soaking in the sun and the sounds of the forest.

Who it’s for

This is best for adventurous couples, groups of friends, and anyone who is steady on their feet and enjoys a more natural, less-developed environment. It’s probably not the best choice for families with very young children or those with mobility issues.

Practical information

  • Location: North of Duong Dong town.
  • How to get there: The road can be a bit bumpy, so a taxi is a good option. If you are a confident scooter rider, that works too.
  • Entrance fee: There is also a small entrance fee here.

Da Ngon Waterfall – A challenge for true adventurers

Da Ngon waterfall has a picturesque landscape, surrounded by an immense primeval forest.

We must mention this waterfall, but with a very strong warning. Da Ngon Waterfall is for serious, experienced hikers only. It is not a casual tourist spot.

The path is difficult, slippery, and requires climbing through dense jungle. You absolutely MUST hire a local guide to attempt this trek. However, for those who are prepared, the reward is a stunning, powerful waterfall that is completely untouched by tourism. This is for the true adventurers who want a hardcore jungle experience.

Other waterfalls in Phu Quoc

Suoi Tien Waterfall

Suoi Tien Phu Quoc Waterfall is surrounded by rose myrtle
  • Location: Ham Ninh Commune, Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province

Suoi Tien, the ‘Fairy Stream’, is a pristine hideaway where the water flows gently over rocks into a series of calm, clear pools that are perfect for a refreshing dip. Surrounded by fragrant myrtle trees, it’s less of a thunderous waterfall and more of a natural water garden where you can sit and feel the cool stream pamper your soul.

To experience this magic, it’s essential to visit during the rainy season (May-Oct) when the stream is full. In the dry months, it can be nearly empty. If you visit at the right time, make it special by packing a picnic. Imagine enjoying delicious local treats like steamed Ham Ninh crab or chicken with green pepper right by the water’s edge—it’s a perfect Phu Quoc memory.

Suoi Lon Waterfall

  • Location: Duong To Commune, Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province

Unlike Suoi Tranh or even Suoi Da Ban, Suoi Lon Waterfall is not a destination you can simply visit on a whim. It is a stunningly beautiful and pristine cascade, but it’s hidden deep in the jungle with no marked trails or facilities. The ‘hiking’ required to get there is actually strenuous trekking through a dense, primeval forest. Therefore, the idea of swimming casually or organizing a barbecue is simply not practical or safe. For this reason, a visit to Suoi Lon is reserved for serious, physically fit explorers and must be done with a certified local guide. It is a beautiful, enigmatic part of our island, but one that demands respect and expert preparation.

Important tips for your waterfall visit

A special Phu Quoc waterfall located deep in the forest

To make sure you have a safe and wonderful time, please keep our  personal tips in mind:

  • Wear the right shoes: This is my number one rule. Please wear closed-toe shoes with good grip, like trainers or walking sandals. Do NOT wear flip-flops. The rocks are always slippery, even when they look dry.
  • Pack smartly: Bring a small bag with:
    • Swimwear: Wear it under your clothes for an easy change.
    • A towel: A small, quick-dry towel is perfect.
    • Insect repellent: A must-have for any jungle walk.
    • Drinking water: Stay hydrated!
    • Cash: For entrance fees and maybe a fresh coconut from a small stall.
  • Food and drinks: There are usually small stalls near the entrance selling drinks and simple snacks, but for a better experience, I recommend bringing your own picnic.
  • Be careful: Walk slowly and watch your step. Never dive into the pools, as you don’t know the depth or if there are rocks underneath.
  • Respect nature: Please help us keep our waterfalls beautiful. Take all of your rubbish with you when you leave.
