If you are already in Vietnam and your visa is close to expiry, start with the valid-until date on the document you actually hold. There is no universal one-month or three-month tourist extension that applies to every traveller. Your next step depends on your current visa, your legal situation and whether a qualifying Vietnam-based party can support a new visa application.

Can Indian Travellers Extend or Renew a Vietnam Visa?
Sometimes an in-country solution may exist, but there is no single extension procedure for every tourist or e-Visa holder. Current Vietnam Embassy guidance states that an e-Visa holder already in Vietnam may ask a qualifying agency, organisation or individual in Vietnam to guarantee the stay and apply for a new visa under the applicable law.
That is different from saying every tourist can automatically add 15 days, one month or three months to the current visa.
What Should You Do Before the Current Visa Expires?
- Check the exact valid-until date. Use the issued visa or e-Visa, not a remembered itinerary date.
- Identify what document you currently hold. The legal route can depend on the visa category and purpose.
- Contact the competent Vietnam Immigration authority or a qualifying inviting/guaranteeing party. Ask what route is available for your exact case.
- Do not overstay while waiting for an answer. If an in-country route is not available, prepare to leave before the permitted stay ends.
What Does the Official e-Visa Guidance Say?
The Vietnam Embassy in India currently says that after entering Vietnam on an e-Visa, a traveller can request a qualifying agency, organisation or individual in Vietnam to guarantee the stay and apply on the traveller’s behalf for a new visa at the Vietnam Immigration Department under the applicable rules.
The useful wording here is “new visa”. Do not convert that into a promise that the current tourist visa can simply be extended for a fixed number of days.
Is “Visa Extension” the Same as “Visa Renewal”?
Private visa companies often use “extension” and “renewal” as service labels. For the traveller, the more important questions are:
- What legal outcome will I receive?
- Is this a change to the current permission or a new visa?
- Who is the competent authority handling it?
- Is a Vietnam-based inviter or guarantor required?
- Do I need to leave Vietnam before applying again?
Ask for the legal basis and expected document, not only the service name used in a sales page.
Do Not Rely on Old Fixed Extension Tables
Older visa-service pages commonly publish:
- “15-day extension”;
- “1-month extension”;
- “3-month renewal”;
- fixed USD price tables;
- a guaranteed 5–7-working-day processing time.
These should not be presented as universal current rules for an Indian tourist. Government fees, eligibility, documents and timing depend on the actual immigration procedure.
What Should You Ask Before Paying a Private Service?
If you use a private company to help with an in-country case, ask for a written explanation of:
- the legal route being used;
- the competent authority handling the application;
- whether a qualifying inviter or guarantor is involved;
- the government fee, if applicable, separated from the service fee;
- the document or visa you are expected to receive;
- what happens if the application is not approved.
A private service fee is not the same thing as an official immigration fee.
What Documents Might Be Needed?
There is no single tourist-renewal checklist that applies to every case. The competent authority or the qualifying party supporting the application will determine the documents required for the legal route being used.
At minimum, be ready to provide accurate passport and current visa information and details of your most recent lawful entry. Do not build the application around a copied NA5/photo checklist unless the authority handling your case actually requires it.
What If an In-Country New Visa Is Not Available?
You may need to leave Vietnam before the current permitted stay expires and apply for the appropriate visa from outside Vietnam. Whether that is the correct next step depends on your situation, so confirm it before booking a border trip or a new flight.

What If You Have Already Overstayed?
Contact the competent Vietnamese Immigration authority directly. The handling, penalties and exit procedure depend on the case. Do not rely on a travel blog or private agent promising a fixed fine or guaranteed outcome.
How to Avoid This Problem on a Future Trip
Before the next Vietnam trip, make the visa validity part of the itinerary rather than treating it as a separate administrative task. If the route includes another country and a return to Vietnam, check whether multiple entry is required. If the trip dates are not final, avoid requesting a validity period that does not protect the full journey.
