Vietnam has become one of the top trending destinations for the “Chennai crowd.” Whether you are a tech professional from OMR taking a quick break, a family planning a summer getaway to Da Nang, or a honeymooning couple heading to the misty bays of Ha Long, the question I hear most frequently is about the Vietnam visa for Indians from Chennai and the latest Vietnam entry requirements for Indian travellers. With the digital transformation of our immigration systems, getting into Vietnam is easier than ever, but there are specific updates – like the new digital arrival forms for Ho Chi Minh City – that you must know to avoid delays. This guide is a distillation of many years of experience, ensuring your trip starts with a smile, not a snag at the airport.
Can Indians enter Vietnam from Chennai?
The short answer is: Absolutely, and you are most welcome!
Indian citizens must have a valid visa to enter Vietnam. Whether you are boarding a flight at Chennai’s Anna International Airport (MAA) or connecting through hubs like Singapore or Bangkok, the visa rules remain consistent. However, the type of visa you choose depends entirely on your travel style and duration.
Our borders are more open than ever, but our immigration officers are also more digital. Let’s break down the options so you can choose the one that fits your itinerary.

Main visa options for Indians
When planning your trip, you generally have three paths to choose from. For 95% of the tourists we assist from Chennai, the first option is the winner.
Vietnam E-Visa
The Vietnam e-visa process from Chennai is conducted entirely online. Since late 2023, this has been expanded to a 90-day validity with multiple-entry options, which is perfect if you plan to visit Vietnam, hop over to Cambodia or Laos, and come back for your flight home from Ho Chi Minh City.
- Who can apply: All Indian passport holders.
- Validity: 30 to 90 days (Single or Multiple entry).
- Best for: Leisure tourists, families, and short business trips.
- Cost: Approximately USD 25 (~₹2,100) for single entry and USD 50 (~₹4,200) for multiple entry.
Visa on Arrival (VOA)
We usually recommend this only for our Chennai clients who have a last-minute emergency and cannot wait the 3–5 business days for an e-visa.
- How it works: You cannot just show up. You must obtain a “Pre-approval Letter” from a licensed agency in Vietnam (or through major Indian travel portals).
- Process: You present this letter at the VOA counter in Hanoi, HCMC, or Da Nang, pay a stamping fee in cash (USD), and get your visa.
- Important Note: This is only valid for air travel. If you are planning a luxury cruise from Chennai that enters a Vietnamese seaport, VOA will not work; you need an e-visa.
Embassy/Consulate-issued Visa
While there is a Vietnamese Embassy in New Delhi and a Consulate in Mumbai, there is currently no diplomatic mission in Chennai.
- Who is this for? Chennai-based students, long-term investors, or those moving for employment (LD/DN visas).
- Process: You must courier your passport and documents to Mumbai or Delhi. It is more expensive and time-consuming, so we only suggest this for complex non-tourist statuses.

Step-by-step Vietnam e-visa process from Chennai
We have seen many Chennai travelers get their e-visas rejected simply because of a bad photo or a swapped surname. Follow these steps carefully:
Step 1: Document readiness
Before you open the portal, ensure your passport has at least 6 months of validity from your return date. This is the most common reason airlines at Chennai Airport deny boarding. Also, ensure you have two blank pages for stamps.
Step 2: The official portal
Only use the official government site: https://evisa.gov.vn. Be very careful of “look-alike” websites that charge “service fees” of ₹5,000 or more. The official site is simple and secure.
Step 3: Photo requirements
You will need to upload two photos:
- A bio-page scan: A clear, full-page scan of your passport.
- A portrait photo: Full face, white background, no glasses, and no headgear (unless for religious reasons).
Expert Tip: Don’t use a selfie! Go to a professional studio in T. Nagar and ask for a “Vietnam E-visa compliant digital photo.” Rejections are almost always due to “blurred images” or “wearing glasses.”
Step 4: Filling the form
Be meticulous.
- Name order: Match the Machine Readable Zone (the arrows and letters at the bottom of your passport page) exactly.
- Entry/Exit ports: If your flight from Chennai goes MAA -> SIN -> SGN, your entry port is “Tan Son Nhat Int Airport (HCMC).” If you select the wrong airport, you may be denied entry.
Step 5: Payment and tracking
The fee is USD 25 (Single Entry). In our experience, some Indian credit cards fail on the Vietnamese payment gateway. VNS always suggests our Chennai clients use a Global Travel Card or a card enabled for international e-commerce. You will receive a “Registration Code” – keep this safe to track your status.
Update: The Ho Chi Minh City digital arrival card
This is a very important update for Vietnam entry requirements for Indian travellers. If you are flying into Tan Son Nhat International Airport (HCMC) – which many Chennai flyers do via Scoot or AirAsia – you must now complete an Online Arrival Form (Digital Card) before landing.
This is a pre-arrival declaration that generates a QR code.
- When to do it: Within 72 hours of your flight.
- Where: The link is usually provided on your e-visa approval email or the HCMC airport official site.
- Why? To reduce the massive queues we used to have in 2024 and 2025. If you have your QR code ready on your phone, you can breeze through the “Fast Track” digital lanes.
Core entry requirements for Indian travellers
Once you have your visa, you aren’t quite finished. At the Chennai check-in counter and at Vietnamese immigration, you may be asked for the following:
- Physical printout of e-visa: Our immigration officers love paper. Carry two color prints of your e-visa PDF.
- Return or onward ticket: This is a non-negotiable Vietnam entry requirement for Indian travellers. If you cannot show when you are leaving Vietnam, you might not be allowed to board in Chennai.
- Accommodation proof: Have your hotel booking or tour itinerary (from an agency like Vietnam Story) ready on your phone.
- Travel insurance: While not strictly mandatory for a visa, we strongly advise all our Chennai guests to have it. Medical costs for foreigners in Vietnam can be high, and a small ₹2,000 policy can save you lakhs.

Common mistakes to avoid
Here is how to stay out of trouble:
- The name game: Indian passports often have long “Given Names” including the father’s name. If your e-visa says “Rajesh Kumar” but your passport says “Rajesh Kumar Sundaram,” you will likely face an hour-long interrogation at the border. Match the passport exactly.
- Port confusion: If you apply for a visa for Hanoi (Noi Bai) but find a cheaper flight from Chennai to Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat), you cannot use the same e-visa if the entry port is different on the document. You will have to apply for a new one.
- The “Jain/veg” meal check: This isn’t a visa rule, but a “Minh Rule.” If you are a strict vegetarian or Jain from Chennai, ensure your tour operator or hotel knows this before you arrive. While “Chay” (vegetarian food) is common in Vietnam, “No Onion/No Garlic” requires pre-arrangement.
Best visa option by traveler profile
| Traveler Profile from Chennai | Best Visa Option | Why? |
| Leisure Tourist (5–10 days) | 90-Day Single Entry E-visa | Easiest, cheapest, and entirely online. |
| The “Backpacker” (Exploring SE Asia) | 90-Day Multiple Entry E-visa | Allows you to visit Cambodia/Thailand and return to Vietnam easily. |
| The Spontaneous Traveler | Visa on Arrival (VOA) | If you decide on a Thursday to fly on a Saturday, this is your only hope. |
| Business/Work Immigrant | Embassy-issued Sticker Visa | Necessary for legal work permits and long-term residency. |
Chennai-specific travel route and visa tips
Chennai is uniquely positioned with fantastic connections to Southeast Asia. Here is how your route affects your entry:
The “budget” route: Chennai – Bangkok – Vietnam
Flights via AirAsia (transiting DMK) are our favorite.
Tip: If you have a long layover in Bangkok and want to step out for some shopping at Sukhumvit, remember you need a Thai visa too! For Vietnam, your e-visa works perfectly at Hanoi, Da Nang, and HCMC airports.
The “efficiency” Route: Chennai – Singapore – Vietnam
Scoot and Singapore Airlines offer very short layovers.
Tip: This is the most common route for those landing in Ho Chi Minh City. Remember the Digital Arrival Card for HCMC!
The “Direct-ish” route: Chennai – Delhi/Kolkata – Vietnam
With IndiGo and Air India expanding, you might transit within India.
Tip: You will go through Indian customs in Delhi or Kolkata, but your Vietnam visa for Indians from Chennai will only be checked once you land on Vietnamese soil.
Summary
To our dear Chennai travelers, Vietnam is a land of incredible beauty, much like the Tamil coast but with emerald mountains and a different rhythm of life. To ensure your trip is perfect, here is your quick-fire checklist:
