For over years now, VNS has been helping Indian travellers plan their trips to Vietnam – especially those coming from places like Guwahati, Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata – and one of the first questions they always ask is: “How do I actually reach Vietnam from Guwahati?”. The answer is simple: there are no direct flights from Guwahati (GAU) to Vietnam, but you can comfortably reach Hanoi (HAN), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), or Da Nang (DAD) in about 8 – 16 hours total air travel, usually through Delhi, Kolkata, Bangkok, or Singapore. Total journey time from Guwahati is typically around 10 – 18 hours including layovers. In this article, we’ll walk through flights from Guwahati to Vietnam, show exactly how to reach Vietnam from Guwahati, and explain what you can expect in terms of flight time Guwahati to Hanoi and flight time Guwahati to Ho Chi Minh.
Can you fly directly from Guwahati to Vietnam?
The short and honest answer is: No, not yet. Currently, there are no direct commercial flights from Guwahati (GAU) to any Vietnamese airport. However, don’t let that discourage you. Guwahati is a major hub for Northeast India, and its connectivity to other “gateway” cities is excellent.
When planning your journey, you will essentially be choosing a “One-Stop” or “Two-Stop” pattern. Most of our guests from Guwahati reach me by flying into a major Indian hub (Delhi or Kolkata) or a Southeast Asian hub (Bangkok or Singapore) before making the final jump to Hanoi, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City.
Main ways to reach Vietnam from Guwahati
By air
Air travel is the standard for 99% of our guests. There are two primary “logical” routes for how to reach Vietnam from Guwahati.
Option 1: The Indian Hub Route (Guwahati → Delhi/Kolkata → Vietnam)
- This is the most popular choice. You fly from Guwahati to Delhi (2.5 hours) or Kolkata (1 hour).
- From Delhi or Kolkata, you catch a direct flight to Hanoi (HAN) or Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) via carriers like IndiGo, Air India, or Vietnam Airlines.
- Expert Tip: The Kolkata connection is often the fastest total travel time for the Northeast.
Option 2: The Southeast Asian Hub Route (Guwahati → Bangkok/Singapore → Vietnam)
- You fly from GAU to Bangkok (BKK) or Singapore (SIN).
- From there, you take a short 1.5 to 2-hour flight to any major Vietnamese city.
- This route is often cheaper and offers more flexibility with departure times.
Overland from Guwahati
We occasionally get asked about driving from Guwahati to Vietnam via the India-Myanmar-Thailand-Laos-Vietnam trilateral highway.
While it sounds like a dream, it involves crossing multiple borders with complex car permits. It would take over 30 hours of pure driving and weeks of paperwork. It is not practical for a leisure holiday.

Guwahati ➔ Hanoi (HAN): The gateway to the North
- Typical total flight time: Between 10 and 18 hours total.

How to reach Vietnam from Guwahati by air?
For our Guwahati-based travelers, planning a trip involves these five steps:
Step 1: Decide your region
Do not try to see all of Vietnam in 5 days!
- Select Hanoi for the North (best for December-March).
- Select Da Nang for Central (best for February-August).
- Select Ho Chi Minh for the South (best year-round).
Step 2: Pick your hub
- For Budget: Kolkata or Bangkok.
- For Comfort: Delhi T3 (Full-service carriers like Air India or Singapore Airlines via SIN).
Step 3: Filter your flights
When using Skyscanner or Goibibo, search for “Guwahati to Hanoi” or “Guwahati to HCMC.”
- Filter for 1-Stop: This is the secret to not being exhausted. A 2-stop flight might save you ₹3,000 but will cost you 10 extra hours of your life.
Step 4: Book the round-trip
Round-trip fares from GAU to Vietnam start around ₹20,000–₹35,000 off-season. One-way promotional fares can be found for as low as ₹10,000–₹16,000 if you book 3 months in advance.
Flight-time and comfort tips for Northeast travelers
Having seen many families arrive in Hanoi tired from the GAU-DEL-HAN route, here are our professional tips:
- The “midnight express”: Try to find a flight that departs GAU in the late evening and connects to an early morning international flight. This way, you sleep through the journey and land in Vietnam at 6:00 AM, ready for a bowl of Phở!
- Pack smart: Indian power banks are allowed on flights but must be in your carry-on. Also, bring a neck pillow and a light shawl – flight cabins are much colder than the weather in Guwahati!
- The “senior” rule: If you are traveling with elders from Guwahati, please avoid layovers longer than 5 hours. The walk between gates at Delhi T3 or Bangkok BKK is very long.
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh: Where should you land?
As a local, VNS recommends the Hybrid Strategy for those with 10+ days:
- Fly into Hanoi (HAN): Experience the misty mountains and the UNESCO heritage of the North.
- Move South: Use our very efficient (and cheap!) domestic flights to reach Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City.
- Fly out of HCMC (SGN): Return to Guwahati via HCMC–Kolkata/Bangkok.
This “Top-to-Bottom” route is the most popular for our Guwahati guests because it ensures you never see the same airport twice and you maximize your sightseeing.
