Ninh Binh Old Town (Phố Cổ Hoa Lư): Is It Worth Visiting?

Ninh Binh Old Town was inspired by the traditional culture of Dai Viet in the 10th century

Ninh Binh Old Town, locally known as Phố Cổ Hoa Lư and often searched as Hoa Lu Old Town, is a modern cultural and evening attraction around Ky Lan Lake in central Hoa Lu Ward. It is not the original 10th-century Hoa Lu Ancient Capital. Think of it instead as an easy place to slow down after a day at Trang An, Tam Coc or Hang Mua: you can walk beneath lanterns, take photos by the water, browse local crafts, eat, and enjoy the atmosphere as the area comes alive after sunset.

Vietnam Story’s short answer: if you are staying overnight in Ninh Binh, the Old Town is a good evening add-on rather than a reason to rearrange your whole daytime itinerary. Go for the lights, food, relaxed walk and photos; go to Hoa Lu Ancient Capital if your priority is original historical monuments.

What Is Ninh Binh Old Town — and Is It the Same as Hoa Lu Ancient Capital?

Phố Cổ Hoa Lư is a purpose-built cultural space inspired by traditional Vietnamese architecture and the visual language of Đại Việt. Ninh Binh tourism authorities state that the attraction was inaugurated on 27 January 2022 at Ky Lan Lake. The idea is not to preserve an untouched medieval town, but to create an accessible place where visitors can experience traditional-style architecture, crafts, food and cultural activity in one setting.

This distinction matters because the names are easy to mix up. Hoa Lu Old Town and Hoa Lu Ancient Capital are not the same attraction. If you are looking for the temples, royal history and archaeological context of Vietnam’s early capital, you need Hoa Lu Ancient Capital. If you want an evening walk with lanterns, water reflections, food and a lively atmosphere, you are looking for Phố Cổ Hoa Lư.

Phố Cổ Hoa Lư uses traditional-style architecture to recreate the atmosphere of an older Vietnamese town; it should not be confused with the separate Hoa Lu Ancient Capital.

Planning tip

If history is a priority, do not replace Hoa Lu Ancient Capital with the Old Town. They work better as two different experiences: heritage by day, a modern cultural atmosphere in the evening.

Is Ninh Binh Old Town Worth Visiting?

For most travellers staying at least one night in Ninh Binh, yes — but it is best treated as an evening add-on, not a headline attraction that competes with Trang An, Tam Coc or the historic capital. The reason to come is simple: after a day of boats, viewpoints, temples or cycling, the Old Town gives you somewhere easy to walk, eat and spend time without another demanding excursion.

It is a good fit if…
  • you are staying overnight in Ninh Binh;
  • you want a low-effort evening after sightseeing;
  • you enjoy night photography and lantern-lit spaces;
  • you are travelling with family or a mixed-age group;
  • you want food and a walk without committing to another full tour.
It is a lower priority if…
  • you only have a very short Ninh Binh day trip;
  • your return to Hanoi is already early in the evening;
  • you are looking specifically for preserved ancient streets;
  • your main interest is the historical Hoa Lu capital.

It also helps to arrive with the right expectation. This is not Hoi An in miniature, and it is not an archaeological quarter. Its strength is the contrast it adds to a Ninh Binh trip: quiet limestone landscapes and heritage sites during the day, followed by lights, food, water reflections and a more social atmosphere at night.

Where Is Hoa Lu Old Town and How Do You Get There?

Current Ninh Binh tourism information places Phố Cổ Hoa Lư in central Hoa Lu Ward, around Ky Lan Lake and Chùa Bạc. If you have read an older guide that says “Ninh Binh City,” it is describing the same central area using the former administrative name. Hoa Lu Ward began operating under the new local-government structure from 1 July 2025.

Why the location name can look confusing

Older hotel listings, travel blogs and map descriptions may still use Ninh Binh City, Tân Thành or the former city-level address. For navigation, search the place name “Phố Cổ Hoa Lư” rather than relying only on the administrative label. Open Phố Cổ Hoa Lư in Google Maps

From Tam Coc

If you are staying in Tam Coc, a taxi or Grab is usually the simplest option for an evening visit. This is one reason we prefer to treat the Old Town as a flexible night activity: you can finish your daytime sightseeing, return to your hotel to rest, then decide whether you still want to go out.

From Trang An

The same logic applies if your hotel is around Trang An. Arrange a taxi or Grab rather than planning your whole day around the Old Town. If you are travelling with children, older family members or a private group, a pre-arranged car can make the return journey easier at night.

From Hanoi

If you are coming from Hanoi specifically for Ninh Binh, build your transport around your main daytime attractions first. Trains, limousine vans and private cars all connect Hanoi with the Ninh Binh area, but Phố Cổ Hoa Lư is rarely the reason to make the journey on its own. It makes more sense as the final stop of a Ninh Binh day when you are already staying locally.

When to Visit, Entrance and Paid Activities

Phố Cổ Hoa Lư is at its most distinctive in the late afternoon and evening. Ninh Binh’s tourism authority highlights the area as part of the province’s night-tourism offer, with lantern-lit streets, cultural performances, craft stalls and local food forming the main evening experience. If you are deciding which season suits the wider trip, our Ninh Binh weather and best-time guide covers the seasonal trade-offs in more detail.

The Old Town is primarily an evening experience, when lanterns and lighting change the atmosphere around the lake.
Late afternoonSee the architecture more clearly, take daylight photos and arrive before the evening becomes busier.
Around sunsetStay for the transition as the lake, buildings and lanterns begin to change character.
EveningThis is the main experience: lights, reflections, food, walking and any cultural activity scheduled for that night.

Is Ninh Binh Old Town free to enter?

The latest official provincial visitor-price information we found, published for July 2025, listed general sightseeing at Phố Cổ Hoa Lư as free. Paid activities and purchases inside the area are separate. Because ticket policies can change, check the current notice at the attraction if a specific cost matters to your budget.

What about the boat ride?

The Ky Lan Lake boat ride is a separate paid experience. The July 2025 provincial price list published adult fares of VND 100,000 for the standard boat ticket and VND 150,000 for the VIP option at that time. We recommend treating those figures as a reference rather than a guaranteed current rate: check the official ticket counter before boarding.

We have deliberately not given a fixed boat-ride duration here. Different online pages currently publish conflicting figures, and we would rather leave out a number than give you a false sense of precision.

Are there performances every night?

Do not plan around a guaranteed daily show unless you have checked the current programme. Official tourism information confirms traditional arts and cultural activity at the Old Town, with music and cultural events particularly associated with weekends and festivals. The exact programme can vary by date.

Things to Do at Ninh Binh Old Town

Traditional-style costume, craft and cultural displays add visual context to the modern recreated setting.
  1. Walk the lantern-lit streets. The simplest experience is also the main reason to visit. Slow down, walk around Ky Lan Lake and enjoy the contrast between the traditional-style architecture and the evening lights. You do not need a complicated plan here.
  2. Take a boat ride on Ky Lan Lake. The illuminated boats and reflections are one of the Old Town’s signature visuals. It is an optional paid activity, so decide based on the queue, current fare and how much time you have.
  3. Photograph the Old Town after sunset. For photos, look for reflections on the water, bridges, rows of lanterns and the wider view across the lake. Arriving before sunset gives you both daylight and night images without making two separate visits.
  4. Browse traditional crafts and local products. Ninh Binh tourism sources specifically highlight craft products connected with local and Vietnamese craft villages. Browsing these stalls can be more interesting if you treat them as part of the cultural display rather than simply souvenir shopping.
  5. Eat and enjoy the evening atmosphere. Food is part of the experience, with Ninh Binh specialties such as cơm cháy and goat dishes represented in the wider area. Cultural performances and special programmes may add more atmosphere when they are scheduled.

If your main interest is the dedicated night-market experience, keep the two ideas separate: the Old Town page is useful for understanding the whole attraction, while the night market is only one part of the evening scene.

Where to Eat Around Hoa Lu Old Town

Food and evening stalls are part of the wider Old Town experience, but you do not need to make the night market the focus of your visit.

You do not have to eat a full dinner inside the Old Town. If you enjoy casual food stalls, browse first and see what appeals to you. If you prefer a sit-down meal, there are several restaurants around the central Hoa Lu area that are easy to check before you go.

For vegetarian and Jain travellers

“Vegetarian” and “Jain” are not interchangeable. If you follow a Jain diet, confirm your requirements clearly — especially onion, garlic, root vegetables and preparation methods. A vegetarian restaurant may still use ingredients that do not meet Jain dietary practice.

If you specifically want a full Indian meal, you will generally find a stronger selection around the Tam Coc tourist area than inside Phố Cổ Hoa Lư itself. For Indian families and groups, it is often easier to plan dinner separately and use the Old Town for the evening walk, photos and snacks.

Need Indian food?

Restaurant listings change faster than attraction information. Instead of duplicating a second restaurant directory here, use our Indian restaurants in Ninh Binh guide for the broader shortlist, then confirm the current address and opening status before you go.

How to Fit Ninh Binh Old Town Into Your Ninh Binh Itinerary

The Old Town works best when it fills the gap that many Ninh Binh itineraries naturally have: what to do after the main daytime attractions close or your sightseeing energy starts to drop. You do not need to sacrifice Trang An, Tam Coc or Hang Mua to make room for it.

Simple ways to combine the Old Town with a Ninh Binh day
Your daytime planHow the Old Town fits
Trang AnReturn to your hotel, rest, then visit the Old Town in the evening if you still want to go out.
Tam Coc + Hang MuaKeep the Old Town optional. Hang Mua can be tiring, so do not force another activity if your group needs a slower evening.
Hoa Lu Ancient Capital + Trang AnThis is a good contrast: genuine historical heritage during the day, followed by a modern cultural space at night.
Hanoi day trip onlyLower priority if your return transport leaves early. Focus on the major daytime attraction rather than rushing through both.

For families and private groups, this flexibility is useful. Ninh Binh days can become surprisingly full once you include hotel transfers, boat queues, meals and photo stops. We would rather leave one evening activity optional than design an itinerary that looks impressive on paper but feels rushed in real life. If you are still choosing the daytime stops, compare them in our guide to places to visit in Ninh Binh before adding the Old Town at night.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Come before dark if you enjoy photography.You will see the architecture in natural light and then get the lantern-lit version in the same visit.
Wear comfortable shoes.The Old Town is mainly a walking experience, so comfort matters more than dressing for a formal attraction.
Carry some Vietnamese Dong.Payment methods vary by stall and business. Cash is useful for small purchases even if some restaurants accept other methods.
Check special events if they matter to you.Performances and weekend programmes vary, so do not build your whole evening around an unverified schedule.
Keep dietary requests specific.“Chay” is useful for vegetarian food, but Jain requirements need a more detailed conversation about ingredients and preparation.
Do not over-schedule the evening.The Old Town is most enjoyable when you can stroll rather than race from one “must-do” item to another.
Is Ninh Binh Old Town the same as Hoa Lu Ancient Capital?
No. Ninh Binh Old Town, or Phố Cổ Hoa Lư, is a modern cultural attraction around Ky Lan Lake. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is the separate historic site associated with Vietnam’s early dynasties.
Is Ninh Binh Old Town worth visiting at night?
Yes, especially if you are already staying overnight in Ninh Binh and want an easy evening activity with lanterns, food, photos and a relaxed walk.
Is entry to Hoa Lu Old Town free?
The latest official provincial visitor-price information we found listed general sightseeing as free. Optional activities such as the Ky Lan Lake boat ride are charged separately, and current prices should be checked on arrival.
When is the best time to visit?
Late afternoon into the evening is the most useful window: arrive with some daylight, stay through sunset and enjoy the lantern-lit atmosphere after dark.

Phố Cổ Hoa Lư is not the place that defines Ninh Binh — the limestone landscape, waterways and historical sites do that. What the Old Town does well is give you a pleasant way to finish the day. If you understand that role before you go, it is much easier to enjoy the lights, food and relaxed atmosphere without expecting it to be something it is not.
