South Vietnam works best when you decide how much of the trip belongs to three very different blocks: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc. The city gives you history, food, shopping and the main transport hub. The Mekong changes the pace through rivers, orchards and smaller communities. What belongs in a South Vietnam itinerary?
Ho Chi Minh City is the anchor; the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc are two very different extensions. Cu Chi is usually an excursion from the city rather than another hotel base. The route works best when you decide whether you want more mainland depth or a genuine island block instead of treating every southern highlight as compulsory.

Ho Chi Minh City is the anchor, not just the arrival airport
We normally give Ho Chi Minh City at least two useful sightseeing periods on a first southern trip. One can be more structured—museums, historic landmarks or a guided walk—while another can be left for markets, cafés, food, shopping or neighbourhood time. The city loses its value when it is treated only as the hotel between two long excursions.
For families and senior travellers, the practical issue is often heat, traffic and walking rather than the number of attractions. A midday hotel break can make more difference than adding one more landmark. For couples or groups of friends, the city also works well as the most flexible part of the route because evenings can remain open without affecting a cruise or flight connection.
Stay centrally enough that the hotel does not create a new daily transfer problem. A room that looks cheaper farther from the centre can lose its advantage when every meal, pickup and evening requires another cross-city journey.
Mekong Delta: day trip or overnight stay?
A day trip is enough when the Mekong is one contrast inside a short itinerary; an overnight stay makes more sense when river life is one of the reasons you chose the South. The difference is not simply “more attractions”. Staying overnight changes the rhythm: you are no longer doing the entire delta experience inside one road-return window from Ho Chi Minh City.

When does Phu Quoc earn the extra flight?
We add Phu Quoc when beach or resort time is a real priority and at least two useful island nights remain after the flight and transfers. One rushed night rarely changes the trip enough to justify another check-out, airport, baggage process and hotel transfer.
The island works especially well as the final part of a South Vietnam route. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong are more active; Phu Quoc can then deliberately become slower. That does not mean every island day should be empty. It means one cable-car, boat or family attraction does not need to be stacked beside another simply because the hotel is already booked.
- Add Phu Quoc when you can protect at least two proper island nights.
- Skip it when the flight creates a one-night stay or a same-day connection that depends on perfect timing.
- Reduce the mainland block when the island is the main purpose of the trip.
- Check baggage and connection rules before assuming the domestic sector behaves like the international India–Vietnam ticket.

What would we leave out?
We remove the extra transfer before we remove the experience that made you choose the South. That usually means:
- Doing Cu Chi and a full Mekong programme on the same day just to tick both boxes.
- Adding Phu Quoc for one night after an already full mainland route.
- Using Ho Chi Minh City only as a transfer hub with no real city time.
- Adding Da Lat, Mui Ne or another distant stop without removing something else.
- Booking a domestic flight that leaves no usable time on either side of the airport process.
Food, mobility and weather change the route more than traveller labels
South Vietnam is easy to describe as “city + river + beach”, but the practical trip changes when food, mobility or weather constraints are real. Ho Chi Minh City gives the widest choice for Indian and vegetarian meals; fixed-menu excursions and smaller river stops need more advance communication. Jain, no-onion/no-garlic and allergy requests should be written separately rather than treated as generic “vegetarian”.
Mobility matters differently in each block. The city can involve heat and walking; the Mekong may involve small boats, steps or uneven boarding; Phu Quoc depends heavily on the resort and selected activities. We would reduce transfers before assuming a traveller needs an entirely different “senior” or “family” itinerary.
Weather should also be checked by destination and date. A rainy afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City can often be replaced with indoor city time; an island boat plan may need a different fallback. Keep at least one low-priority activity flexible rather than pre-booking every hour.
