Travelers from Kolkata have excellent connectivity to Vietnam. The most convenient options are the direct flights operated by IndiGo and VietJet Air from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) to Vietnam’s international airports, which significantly reduce travel time. Alternatively, numerous one-stop flights are available.
IndiGo (via Bangkok)
AirAsia (via Kuala Lumpur)
Thai Airways (via Bangkok)
Singapore Airlines (via Singapore)
The total travel time for connecting flights is around 6–10 hours, depending on layovers. Booking 2–3 months in advance ensures better fares, especially during peak seasons like Durga Puja.
Yes, Indian citizens holding an Indian passport must obtain a visa before traveling to Vietnam. The most convenient method is the Vietnam E-Visa.
Application: Apply online via the official Vietnam Immigration portal. Most travel agents in Kolkata will handle this process for you as part of the package.
Processing Time: Typically takes 3–5 business days.
Validity: Up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry options.
Required Documents: A scanned copy of your passport, a digital passport-size photo, and your travel dates.
Fee: The stamping fee is around USD 25 for a single entry.
For a completely seamless process, your chosen travel agent will provide full visa assistance.
Vietnam’s diverse climate means the best time to visit depends on the region. However, for a general trip covering major areas:
Spring (March-May) & Autumn (September-November): These shoulder seasons offer pleasant weather across the country, making them ideal for sightseeing with fewer crowds and better deals.
Winter & Durga Puja Season (October-February): This is a peak time for travelers from Kolkata. The weather in North Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay) is cool and dry, perfect for exploring. Book well in advance to secure good prices.
Summer (June-August): This is the rainy season in the North and South, but it’s a great time for beach holidays in Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An).
Avoid the peak rainy season (July–October) in the north and south, as heavy rainfall can sometimes disrupt travel plans.
Getting around in Vietnam is easy and affordable. Within cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, ride-hailing apps like Grab (similar to Uber) are extremely popular for booking cars and bikes. Traditional taxis are also readily available. For traveling between major cities (e.g., Hanoi to Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City), domestic flights are the fastest and most convenient option, with airlines like VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways offering frequent services. For shorter inter-city journeys, comfortable sleeper buses and trains are also great alternatives.
While Vietnamese cuisine is a delicious adventure in itself, those craving familiar flavors won’t be disappointed. Major cities have numerous Indian restaurants serving dal, paratha, biryani, and a wide variety of vegetarian options. Popular choices include:
Hanoi: Namaste Hanoi, Dalcheeni
Ho Chi Minh City: Baba’s Kitchen, Namaste India
Da Nang: Family Indian Restaurant
Many tour packages designed for Indian tourists, especially from Kolkata, are mindful of dietary preferences and often include meals at Indian restaurants. For a true taste of home, bringing a few ready-to-eat Bengali meal packets is always a good idea.
Ninh Binh: Often referred to as “Ha Long Bay on land,” this serene region offers a rich cultural and spiritual journey. You can explore the ancient Ninh Binh Old Town, marvel at sacred architecture in Ninh Binh’s pagodas, and immerse yourself in nature at a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Hoi An: An enchanting ancient town with beautiful lantern-lit streets, historic architecture, and famous tailor shops.
Da Nang: A coastal city known for My Khe Beach, the spectacular Ba Na Hills with its Golden Bridge, and the Marble Mountains.
Ho Chi Minh City: A dynamic metropolis where you can explore the War Remnants Museum and the incredible Cu Chi Tunnels.
For a spiritual touch, the My Son Sanctuary and the pagodas within the Marble Mountains are highly recommended.
A standard 7-day Vietnam tour package from Kolkata typically costs between ₹45,000 to ₹75,000 per person. This generally covers return flights, 3-star or 4-star accommodation, breakfast, guided sightseeing, and airport transfers.
Budget meals: ₹300–₹600 per meal at a local eatery.
Mid-range hotels: ₹2500–₹5000 per night if booking separately.
Local transport: ₹100–₹500 per ride using Grab.
For those on a tight budget, it’s possible to manage on ₹2500–₹3500 per day (excluding flights), while luxury travelers can expect to spend considerably more for premium experiences.
Vietnam has a diverse climate that varies significantly from north to south, unlike Kolkata’s more uniform tropical weather:
North Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa): Has four distinct seasons with cool, dry winters (Dec-Feb) and hot, humid summers. It can get surprisingly cold in the mountains.
Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hue): Experiences a long dry season (Feb-Aug), making it perfect for beach lovers. The rainy season is concentrated from September to December.
South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City): Has two seasons—wet and dry. The climate is consistently hot and humid, quite similar to Kolkata’s summer months.
It’s essential to pack accordingly: light cotton clothes for the south, and a light jacket or sweater if visiting the north during winter.

Essential packing items for a comfortable trip include: ✅ Light cotton and breathable clothing for Vietnam’s generally humid climate. ✅ Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for city tours and sightseeing. ✅ A light jacket or shawl, especially for cool evenings in the north or air-conditioned spaces. ✅ Universal travel adapter, as Vietnam uses Type A, C, and D plugs. ✅ Essential medicines, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a basic first-aid kit. ✅ Modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) for visiting temples and pagodas. ✅ A few packets of instant Bengali snacks or ready-to-eat meals for moments when you crave home flavors.
Downloading Google Translate and a ride-hailing app like Grab on your phone before you leave is highly recommended.

4 hour tour of Hanoi -old quarter, train street, rickshaw, mausoleum
Miami was our tour guide, she was magnificent! We did a private tour with just my husband and I. She was so informative, and explained so much about the culture and history of Vietnam. It was our first visit, so we learned a lot. She answered all of our many questions, and her English was excellent! When we booked our trip she adjusted the things to see based on our interest. I would highly recommend! Thank you for a beautiful day!

One of the memorable trips of my life
This trip to vietnam was one of the memorable trips of my life because of the wonderfull services provided by Vietnam stories, the wing of the Indochina travel group looking after Indian clients. They booked all the facilities that were promised in the itinerary and were transparent. The locations they booked were always in the heart of city giving you also enough opportunities to explore. They made are trip comfortable and went out of the way to arrange fireworks viewing in Da Nang. The people of Vietnam are polite, friendly and the country is beautiful.
