Is Cat Ba part of Ha Long Bay?
Not in the simple geographical sense. Cat Ba is an archipelago associated with Hai Phong, and Lan Ha Bay is normally treated as a distinct travel area. However, in 2023 UNESCO added the Cat Ba Archipelago to the World Heritage property, whose official name is now Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago. That change enlarged the heritage property; it did not make every place around Cat Ba geographically “Ha Long Bay”.
Where is Ha Long Bay in relation to Hanoi?
Hanoi is west of Ha Long Bay and is the usual mainland starting point for many international travellers visiting northern Vietnam. In itinerary terms, Ha Long is normally planned as a separate eastward journey from Hanoi rather than as a district or attraction inside the capital.

Which gateways serve Ha Long Bay?
Two names appear frequently on Ha Long cruise itineraries: Tuan Chau and Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay. Your actual departure point depends on the cruise operator and route, so check the confirmed booking details rather than assuming every Ha Long cruise uses the same port.
Port schedules, fees and boarding procedures can change. Check those details on your confirmed cruise information close to travel instead of treating an old timetable or fee as permanent.
Are Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay the same place?
No. They are neighbouring or closely related travel areas in the wider northeastern coastal landscape, but the names are not interchangeable. Ha Long Bay is the geographical bay in Quang Ninh; Lan Ha Bay lies around the Cat Ba side of the landscape; and Bai Tu Long Bay lies farther northeast of the classic Ha Long area.
Some cruise itineraries market these areas together because the scenery is related and routes can connect them. That does not make them one geographical bay. If a cruise route matters to your decision, check the itinerary’s actual stops rather than relying only on the product name.
What should you confirm before travelling to the bay?
Check the named bay or route on your itinerary, the departure port, and whether your transfer starts in Hanoi or somewhere else. Those three details are more useful for location planning than a generic map pin labelled “Ha Long Bay”.
