Getting Around Phu Quoc: How We’d Use Grab, Taxis, Drivers & Scooters

Phu Quoc International Airport is also a major airport in Vietnam

Getting around Phu Quoc is easy once you stop treating the island like a compact city. The attractions are spread across north, central-west and south zones, so the right transport depends on where you stay and whether the day is a short dinner transfer, a cross-island attraction day or a countryside route.

For most Indian families and couples, we use a mix of pre-arranged airport transfer, Grab/taxi for simple point-to-point trips and a private car or organised tour for longer multi-stop days. A scooter gives more freedom, but we would only recommend it to travellers who are properly licensed, insured and comfortable riding in local road conditions.

Airport → hotelPre-booked transfer, hotel shuttle, Grab or taxi depending on the hotel area and arrival time.
Short central tripsGrab/taxi is usually the simplest option when coverage is available.
Full north/south dayPrivate car or organised tour often works better than booking separate rides all day.
Independent ridingScooter only when licence, insurance, confidence and weather all make sense.

The transport choice changes with the route. A solution that works around Duong Dong may be less reliable for a remote north-coast return at the end of the day.

From Phu Quoc Airport to your hotel: decide the hotel area first

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) sits much closer to the central and southern hotel belts than to the far north. That is why an airport transfer should not be priced or timed as one generic “Phu Quoc hotel” journey.

When we arrange arrival transport, we check:

  • the exact hotel, not only the neighbourhood name;
  • arrival time and baggage collection;
  • group size and luggage;
  • whether the hotel already provides a shuttle;
  • whether the same vehicle should continue to another service or only drop at the hotel.

If the flight itself is still being planned, use our Flights from India to Phu Quoc guide before fixing the airport transfer.

Grab and taxis: best for simple point-to-point movement

Ride-hailing and taxis are easiest around the airport, Duong Dong, Long Beach and the more developed visitor areas. They work well for dinner, a market, a short attraction transfer or getting back to the hotel when the route is straightforward.

The part we would not assume is the return journey from a remote stop. A car may be easy to book from the hotel in the morning but harder to find later around quieter northern or countryside areas. For places such as Rach Vem, a stream visit or a rural route, we prefer to decide the return plan before leaving.

Use the current app fare or meter/confirmed quote at the time you travel rather than relying on a fixed INR fare copied from an old blog post.

Private car with driver: useful when the day has several stops

For families, seniors and groups, a private car can make more sense than booking three or four separate rides. The value is not only comfort; it is having the return vehicle already solved when the route reaches a less busy part of the island.

We often compare a private car for:

  • a north-island day with more than one major stop;
  • a South Phu Quoc route combining cultural stops, beach time and Sunset Town;
  • a countryside day where farms/villages are spread along smaller roads;
  • travellers with children, seniors or more luggage.

For route ideas, use our Phu Quoc Countryside Route or the Places to Visit in Phu Quoc guide.

Scooter rental: flexibility comes with responsibility

A scooter can be the most flexible way to move between beaches and local stops, but availability from a rental shop does not mean every traveller is legally or practically covered to ride.

Before renting, check the licence requirement that applies to you, whether your travel insurance covers riding, the helmet and vehicle condition, weather and the roads on the exact route. We would not make a first scooter ride in heavy rain, after dark on an unfamiliar road or with a child simply because it is cheaper than a car.

Public/shuttle buses: useful on specific corridors, not a complete island network

Phu Quoc has shuttle and bus services on selected corridors, including services connected with major visitor zones, but we would not plan the whole island around a single public-transport assumption. Routes, fares and eligibility for free attraction shuttles can change.

Use the current operator information on your travel date. A bus can be useful when its route already matches your hotel and destination; it becomes less useful when you need to connect several attractions in different parts of the island.

How transport changes the best area to stay

Transport and hotel location are really one decision. A central-west base can reduce the number of long cross-island movements on a mixed itinerary; a north base makes more sense when VinWonders/Safari/Grand World dominate; a south base can save time when Hon Thom and Sunset Town are the main priorities.

Use our Where to Stay in Phu Quoc guide to compare the hotel areas alongside the transport pattern. The two decisions should be made together rather than treating the hotel and daily movement as separate problems.

North Phu Quoc transport: solve the return before you go remote

Grand World, VinWonders and Safari are major developed destinations with clearer transport patterns. Rach Vem and some nature/countryside areas are a different kind of trip. We would not treat “north” as one transport zone.

For Rach Vem or Phu Quoc National Park, check road/weather conditions and confirm how you are getting back before the day starts.

South Phu Quoc transport: group the day instead of crossing twice

Hon Thom, Sunset Town, Bai Sao, Ho Quoc Pagoda and Coconut Prison are all in the southern half, but that does not mean they fit comfortably into one overloaded day. The transport saving comes from grouping a sensible set of stops, not from collecting every southern attraction.

If Hon Thom is the main paid day, use our Sun World Hon Thom guide. If the evening ends around Sunset Town, the Kiss Bridge guide helps you work backwards from the current activity schedule.

How much should you budget for Phu Quoc transport?

We would not use one permanent daily transport figure. Your cost changes much more by hotel area and route shape than by the number of travel days alone.

Trip patternWhat usually drives the costHow we would plan it
Central hotel + short dinnersShort app/taxi ridesPay point-to-point; avoid booking a full-day vehicle unnecessarily.
North or south attraction dayLonger cross-island movementCompare a private/organised day against multiple separate rides.
Countryside / remote stopReturn availability as much as outbound fareConfirm the return before leaving.
Scooter-led tripRental + fuel + safety/legal requirementsUse only when the rider is properly covered and confident.

If you are building a total budget from India, our Phu Quoc Trip Cost From India guide treats transport as one layer of the total. Use the live fare or written quotation for the exact journeys in your itinerary rather than an evergreen daily transport estimate.

Our transport rule for Phu Quoc

Use the simplest transport that still solves the return journey. Grab/taxi is fine for an easy central trip. A private car or organised route often makes more sense for a multi-stop day. A scooter is only a good saving when it is also a safe and properly covered choice.

For the overall island route, return to the Phu Quoc travel guide. The best transport plan starts with the same question as the best hotel plan: which part of the island are you actually using today?
