When we help guests choose where to stay in Phu Quoc, we choose the area before the hotel. On this island, a beautiful resort in the wrong location can turn every sightseeing day into another long transfer. For most first-time Indian travellers, Long Beach or central Duong Dong is the easiest base. But if your trip is built around VinWonders and Safari, the north can be smarter; if Hon Thom, Khem Beach and Sunset Town dominate the plan, the south can save a lot of driving.
This guide is about where to base yourself, not a permanent ranking of hotels. Resorts change rates, management and renovation status much faster than the island geography does. If you are still deciding how many days to spend in Phu Quoc, start with our Phu Quoc travel guide first.
Quick answer: which Phu Quoc area would we choose?
| Your trip style | Area we would start with | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| First Phu Quoc trip, 3–4 nights | Central Long Beach / Duong Dong | Not the closest base to either far north or deep south |
| Family focused on VinWonders + Safari | North | South-island days become long transfers |
| Couple wanting quiet beach/resort time | Ong Lang | Less walkable dining and fewer late-evening options |
| Hon Thom + Sunset Town + resort holiday | South | North attractions and central dining are farther away |
| Indian food / vegetarian convenience | Central Long Beach / Duong Dong | You still need transfers for the big north/south attractions |
| 5+ nights with both north and south as priorities | Consider a split stay | Another checkout/check-in can waste time if the trip is already short |
1. Central Long Beach and Duong Dong: the easiest first-time base
For most first-time visitors, this is where we begin. You are closer to the airport, central Duong Dong, west-coast sunsets and the widest choice of restaurants. It also gives the cleanest compromise when one day goes north and another goes south.
Why we like it for Indian travellers
- Indian food: the central/Long Beach zone still has the widest concentration of dedicated Indian restaurants. Use our Indian Restaurants guide for the current shortlist.
- Vegetarian/Jain flexibility: more restaurant choice means it is easier to change plan if one kitchen cannot handle a strict requirement. See our Vegetarian Restaurants guide.
- Evenings: Dinh Cau, central waterfront, west-coast bars and current night-market options are easier to reach without a major transfer.
- Short stays: less time is lost travelling back to an isolated resort after every meal.
What to watch for
“Long Beach” is used loosely on booking platforms. A hotel near central Duong Dong and a resort much farther south on Bai Truong can create very different daily routines. We always open the map pin before comparing room types.
If nightlife and sunset matter, use our Phu Quoc Nightlife guide and Sunset Spots guide to see whether the exact property still fits the evening you want.
2. Ong Lang: quieter west-coast resort time
Ong Lang is the area we consider when the guest wants a calmer stay than central Long Beach but still wants the west-coast sunset side of the island. It can work especially well for couples, honeymooners and travellers who are happy to spend more time at the resort.
The trade-off is convenience. Dining and shops are more spread out, and the exact experience depends heavily on the property. A resort that looks “Ong Lang” on a booking page may still require a car or scooter for dinner outside the hotel.
3. North Phu Quoc: best for theme-park families
We choose the north when VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World are not optional extras but major reasons for the trip.
Who it suits
- families planning two attraction-heavy north-island days;
- travellers who prefer a large integrated resort environment;
- groups who are happy to eat mostly near the resort/Grand World area;
- guests who value shorter park transfers more than central-town convenience.
Who we would not put here by default
A first-time couple planning Bai Sao, Hon Thom, Sunset Town, Duong Dong dining and only one northern attraction can spend too much time crossing the island. In that case, a central base is usually easier.
Indian food in the north is much better than older guides suggest, but we would still verify the exact branch and dietary handling before relying on one restaurant for a strict Jain or vegetarian group.
4. South Long Beach / Sonasea: the middle-ground resort strip
This part of Bai Truong south of the airport is different from central Long Beach. It is more resort-led, with easier airport access than the far north and more organised resort/retail zones around Sonasea.
We use this area when the guest wants a self-contained resort but still wants a reasonable connection to central and south-island days. It can be a good compromise for families and groups that do not need to walk into Duong Dong every evening.
Main trade-off
Do not assume the whole area is walkable simply because Sonasea has dining and shopping. The exact property location still matters. We check whether the hotel is genuinely close to the evening area or requires another shuttle/taxi.
5. South Phu Quoc: Khem Beach, Sunset Town and An Thoi
We choose the south when the trip is deliberately built around Hon Thom, Sunset Town / Kiss Bridge, southern beaches and a resort-led schedule.
The south now has more restaurants and evening activity than older Phu Quoc guides suggest, including Indian options around Sunset Town. But central Duong Dong and the far north remain a commitment.
Best for
- honeymoon/resort-led trips;
- families prioritising Aquatopia and Hon Thom over VinWonders/Safari;
- travellers who want a South Phu Quoc evening without another long return drive;
- longer stays where the resort itself is part of the holiday.
Not the same as staying at Bai Sao
We normally treat Bai Sao as a beach stop rather than the default hotel base. Accommodation choice is thinner and it does not solve the same routing problem as staying around Khem Beach, Sunset Town or An Thoi.
Should you split your Phu Quoc stay?
A split stay can work, but we do not recommend it automatically. Packing, checkout, luggage transfer and another check-in take real holiday time.
If you only have 3–4 nights, we usually keep one base.
If north and south each have multiple priority days, a split stay becomes more useful.
If the point is to relax, another hotel move may defeat the purpose.
For a five-night or longer trip with both north parks and South Phu Quoc resort time as real priorities, a split stay can reduce repeated cross-island drives. For a three-night first visit, it usually creates more logistics than value.
Where should families stay?
We choose the area from the family’s actual plan:
- Mixed first trip: central Long Beach.
- VinWonders + Safari are the headline days: north.
- Aquatopia + Hon Thom + southern resort: south.
- Young children who need flexible food and easy evenings: central often remains the safest compromise.
With children, we care about transfer length, breakfast, pool/beach access, meal flexibility and how quickly the family can return to the room—not just the star rating.
Where should couples and honeymooners stay?
For couples, the choice is more about pace:
- Ong Lang: quieter west-coast feel.
- South / Khem Beach: resort-led honeymoon and dramatic evening setting.
- Central Long Beach: better if you still want restaurants, bars and easy island exploration.
Our Vietnam honeymoon guide can help decide whether Phu Quoc is the relaxation finish or the main focus of the trip.
Where should vegetarian, Jain or halal travellers stay?
For strict food requirements, we do not choose the hotel area only from the beach. Central Long Beach / Duong Dong generally gives the widest flexibility, but north and south now have more dedicated options than they used to.
- Indian restaurants: see our current area guide.
- Vegetarian / vegan / Jain: use our vegetarian guide and communicate strict Jain rules in advance.
- Halal: use our halal guide to distinguish documented certification from halal-focused claims.
If one particular restaurant or certified kitchen is important, map the hotel against that venue before booking. Do not discover after check-in that dinner requires a 45-minute transfer every night.
How weather changes the area decision
The west coast gives the classic sunset experience, but sea conditions can change through the wetter months. We do not choose an east- or west-coast hotel solely from a generic “rainy season” rule because the trip style matters just as much as the water.
Use our Phu Quoc weather-by-month guide for the seasonal baseline, then check the exact property’s recent beach condition and guest reviews close to booking.
Airport transfer: check the exact hotel pin
Phu Quoc International Airport sits south of central Duong Dong, so central and South Long Beach transfers are generally shorter than the far north. The exact drive time still depends on the hotel, traffic and road route.
We would not choose a resort simply because a booking page says “30 minutes from the airport”. Airport transfer is usually one journey; daily attraction/restaurant transfers happen again and again. Choose the base for the trip, not for the first car ride. For the transport side of that decision, use our Getting Around Phu Quoc guide.
What we check before booking a Phu Quoc hotel
- Open the exact property pin on the map.
- Mark the two or three activities that matter most.
- Check Indian/vegetarian/halal food if the group needs it.
- Check whether “beachfront” means direct usable beach access.
- Read recent reviews for construction, beach condition and shuttle dependence.
- Check breakfast and room setup for children/seniors.
- Compare the total daily transfer pattern—not only the room rate.
How we make the final choice
For most first-time Indian travellers, we would start with central Long Beach / Duong Dong because it keeps the trip flexible. We move the base north only when the north attractions dominate; south when Hon Thom and resort time dominate; and Ong Lang when quiet matters more than convenience.
The hotel brand comes after that decision. On Phu Quoc, the right area can improve every day of the trip; the wrong area can add a transfer to every day of the trip.
If you want to compare the island geography before choosing the base, use our Places to Visit in Phu Quoc guide. It is the easiest way to see whether your priority days cluster in the north, central/east or south.
