Thung Nham Bird Park: Tickets, Hours, Birds & Caves

We choose Thung Nham when bird watching and a lower-key nature block fit the Tam Coc side of the itinerary. It is not a substitute for Cuc Phuong’s forest day, Van Long’s wetland boat experience or the Bear Sanctuary Ninh Binh conservation visit. Its advantage is that caves, landscaped nature areas and the bird garden can sit inside a slower half-day or second-day plan without sending the group far across Ninh Binh.

If you are still comparing nature stops rather than planning Thung Nham itself, start with our things to do in Ninh Binh guide. This page stays focused on the Thung Nham visit.

Operating check — reviewed 6 October 2026: Ninh Binh Tourism’s 17 September heavy-rain notice said Thung Nham could keep safe activities open while Hang Bụt, Tiên Cá Cave and Vái Giời Cave were temporarily suspended. We did not find a newer official notice specifically confirming every affected cave had reopened, so check the current circuit with Thung Nham before making a cave the main reason for the visit.

Thung Nham combines the bird garden, caves and landscaped nature areas on the Tam Coc side of Ninh Binh.

What you need to know before visiting Thung Nham Bird Park

For Thung Nham, the practical checks come first: current opening hours, the ticket inclusions, how much walking your group wants and whether bird watching is the main reason for the visit.

Where is Thung Nham Bird Park located?

Thung Nham is in the Hai Nham area of Ninh Binh, close enough to the Tam Coc cluster to work naturally as a second-day or slower half-day nature stop. The exact driving distance depends on your hotel or pickup point, so plan from the real starting location rather than from a generic “Ninh Binh” pin.

Thung Nham Bird Park opening hours

The official 2026 visitor information lists seasonal sightseeing hours: roughly 7:00 AM–6:00 PM in summer and 7:30 AM–5:30 PM in winter. Because operating hours can change for events, weather or management reasons, recheck the official notice for your travel date before planning a very early or late visit.

Thung Nham Bird Park ticket prices

The official Thung Nham price notice effective from 1 April 2026 lists:
  • Adults and visitors from 1.3 m: VND 250,000.
  • Children from 1 m to 1.29 m: VND 150,000.
  • Children under 1m: Free of charge
  • Included: the current 2026 sightseeing ticket includes the boat to the bird garden and the boat to Hang Bụt, plus the standard visitor areas covered by the official ticket.

What the Thung Nham visit actually includes

The bird garden is the main reason to choose Thung Nham over another nature stop.
The visit combines the bird sanctuary with caves, short walking sections and landscaped areas. We would choose the parts that match the group rather than try to complete every named stop.

Bird watching is the main reason to choose Thung Nham

The bird garden is the feature that most clearly separates Thung Nham from another cave, garden or temple stop. Treat the visit as wildlife observation rather than a promise of a fixed number of birds.

  • The main attraction: the bird garden is the reason to prioritise Thung Nham over another cave or temple stop. Official park material describes a large natural bird habitat, but wildlife numbers and visible species vary by time, weather and season.
  • What you may see: water birds and roosting flocks are the main draw, but we would not promise a species checklist on a particular visit. Treat any wildlife sighting as part of the reserve experience rather than a guarantee.
  • The bird-garden boat: this is the most direct way to experience the wetland section. Late afternoon can be useful because birds may be returning to roost, but the number visible changes from day to day and should not be sold as a guaranteed spectacle.
Planner note: if bird activity matters more than caves or gardens, place the bird-garden section late enough in the visit to improve the chance of seeing birds return, while still staying inside the park’s current operating hours.

Caves inside Thung Nham

Official Thung Nham visitor information highlights three cave experiences in the standard sightseeing circuit: Vái Giời Cave, Hang Bụt and Tiên Cá Cave. We would plan around those current named stops rather than carry forward older lists of cave names from third-party guides.
  • Hang Bụt: a water-cave experience included in the current sightseeing ticket. If this cave matters to your visit, check the day’s operating status before relying on it as a fixed part of the itinerary.
  • Vái Giời Cave: a dry cave reached by a stepped climb. Include it when the group is comfortable with extra walking; skip it if the bird garden is the main priority or mobility is limited.
  • Tiên Cá Cave: another named cave on the current Thung Nham visitor circuit. Treat it as one part of the wider nature visit rather than a reason to overpack the day.

What else to include inside Thung Nham

Use the secondary nature areas as optional additions after deciding how much time you want for the bird garden and caves.

Beyond the bird garden and caves, Thung Nham includes landscaped garden and nature areas that can fill the gaps between the main stops. We would treat these as optional rather than build the visit around an old checklist of named photo zones or assumed activities.

If the group wants a slower visit, leave more time for walking and the landscaped areas. If birds are the priority, keep those extras short enough that you still reach the bird garden at the useful time of day.

When is the best time to visit Thung Nham Bird Park?

There are two separate timing decisions here. If your Vietnam dates are still flexible, use our best time to visit Ninh Binh guide for the broader travel window. If your month is already fixed, use the Ninh Binh weather-by-month guide for heat, rain and monthly planning. On this page, the useful question is what time of day best fits the bird garden.

Seasonally

  • Cooler/drier periods: can make walking and boating more comfortable, but they are not automatically the “best” choice for every trip. Choose the wider Ninh Binh season by your full itinerary, not Thung Nham alone.
  • Wetter months: bring greener scenery but also a higher chance of rain affecting walking comfort, visibility or some outdoor operations. Check the short-range forecast close to the visit instead of relying on a fixed seasonal promise.

Time of day for bird watching

For most day visitors, late afternoon is the more practical bird-watching window because it sits inside normal visitor hours and may coincide with birds returning to roost. Do not plan around a guaranteed number of birds, and do not use old 5:00 AM advice without confirming that the attraction is actually open for your date.
Our planning rule: if birds are the priority, keep enough time for the late-afternoon bird-garden section and leave weather buffer. If the day is already full of caves, gardens and another major attraction, Thung Nham can become rushed.

How to fit the transfer around the Thung Nham visit

If you are coming from Hanoi, decide the intercity transfer and usable sightseeing time first. Train, limousine and private-car trade-offs belong in our Hanoi to Ninh Binh transport guide; this specialist page should not duplicate them.

From a Tam Coc-side or local Ninh Binh base, compare a taxi, pre-arranged car, bicycle or app-based ride by the exact pickup point and the return plan. If you expect to rely on ride-hailing rather than a booked vehicle, use our Grab in Ninh Binh guide before making that the backbone of the day.

Practical checks before visiting Thung Nham

Use the current visitor map to judge walking order and which secondary stops are worth adding.
  • Footwear: wear shoes suitable for steps, caves and potentially wet surfaces.
  • Heat and rain: bring water, sun protection and a light rain layer when the forecast is mixed.
  • Bird watching: binoculars can be useful; a large camera is optional, not essential.
  • Food: confirm vegetarian, Jain, allergy or no-onion/no-garlic requirements rather than assuming the attraction restaurant can improvise them.
  • Meals outside the park: use our where to eat in Ninh Binh guide or Indian restaurants in Ninh Binh guide when food choice is a real route decision.
  • Wildlife etiquette: keep noise low around the bird area, follow local instructions and do not treat sightings as guaranteed.

Who Thung Nham suits — and when we would skip it

Choose Thung Nham when bird watching, a slower nature block and the Tam Coc side of the route are already a good fit. It can work well for couples, families and photographers who are happy to walk and do not need every stop to be a headline attraction.

  • Good fit: bird watching is a real interest, you have a second day or slower half-day, and the group is comfortable with some walking.
  • Lower priority: you only have one rushed day from Hanoi, your route already includes another wetland or nature stop, or mobility and heat make the walking sections a poor fit.
  • Do not stack it automatically: Van Long, Cuc Phuong and Thung Nham all add nature, but they do different jobs. Choose the one that creates the best contrast with the rest of the trip.

How we would use Thung Nham in a Ninh Binh route

We would use Thung Nham as a nature-and-birding contrast to Ninh Binh’s boat, viewpoint and heritage stops. Give the bird garden enough time, keep the route realistic, and verify the current ticket, opening hours and weather before travel. If you are still deciding whether this nature stop earns a place over Van Long, Cuc Phuong or another attraction, return to the things to do in Ninh Binh guide and choose by experience type rather than by checklist.
