Cam Thanh is worth adding when you want countryside and waterways, not simply another attraction to tick off. The water-coconut forest sits a short drive or bicycle ride from Hoi An Ancient Town, and the basket boats are only one part of the visit.
The useful decision is whether you want a lively basket-boat area, a quieter route through the palms, or a longer countryside combination with cycling, crafts or cooking. Those choices affect the pace of the visit far more than a generic “Cam Thanh tour” label.

Choose the Cam Thanh experience before booking
Choose this if your group enjoys music, demonstrations and a busier atmosphere. Ask before boarding if you want or do not want the spinning element.
Better when the forest and slower paddling matter more than entertainment. Ask specifically for a quieter route rather than assuming every boat follows the same channel.
Use this when you also want cycling, crafts or a cooking activity. Check the actual schedule so the day does not become a sequence of short staged stops.
Cam Thanh is a water-coconut landscape with real local history
Bay Mau Coconut Forest is part of Cam Thanh, around five kilometres east of the Ancient Town in Hoi An heritage material. The historical-cultural site covers roughly 57.68 hectares and sits in the lower Thu Bon river landscape, where nipa palms grow in brackish, tidal waterways.
The forest is also part of the wider ecological system associated with the Cu Lao Cham–Hoi An Biosphere Reserve. Water coconut has long been tied to local livelihoods: leaves and other parts of the palm have been used for roofing, building materials, handicrafts and fishing-related work.
Hoi An heritage records describe Bay Mau as an important revolutionary base and refuge during the resistance periods. Today, visitors encounter that history alongside the forest’s ecological and craft value.
Hoi An now separates busy and quiet basket-boat routes

In 2025, Hoi An approved a 17-route visitor plan for the Bay Mau Coconut Forest. The plan includes seven routes in livelier central areas, six quieter routes in the central forest, two routes connected with the biosphere buffer area and Cam Thanh bamboo-coconut craft village, and two quieter routes in other sections.
That makes one booking question unusually useful: which route are we taking? If you want music and spinning demonstrations, a lively route may suit you. If you are visiting with older travellers, a baby, or simply prefer the forest itself, ask for a quieter route.
| What you want | Ask for | Check before boarding | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy and performance | A lively central route | Whether spinning is included and whether your own boat will spin | More noise and more boats around you |
| Quiet paddling | A quieter route | How long is actually spent inside the coconut channels | Fewer entertainment-style demonstrations |
| Craft and local context | A route or combination linked with the craft area | Which craft activity is included rather than just a shopping stop | More time on land, less time in the boat |
| Family-friendly pace | Normal paddling without spinning | Boarding setup, life jacket, child policy and heat | You may need to state your preference clearly |
Basket-boat spinning is optional
The fast circular spinning seen in many Cam Thanh videos is a performance, not the basic purpose of the basket boat. Vietnam Tourism presents basket boats as part of Hoi An’s river and countryside experience, and spinning as an optional challenge rather than something every passenger must do.
If you are prone to motion sickness, travelling with a young child, pregnant, recovering from an injury or simply do not enjoy fast movement, tell the operator before boarding that you want a normal paddle only. Watching another boat spin is also different from being inside the spinning boat.
What else can you do in Cam Thanh?

Fishing-net demonstrations, crab catching, coconut-leaf handicrafts and cooking activities are commonly offered around Cam Thanh, but they are not automatic inclusions in every ticket. Treat them as separate product details and decide which ones are actually worth your time.
- Coconut-leaf crafts: useful if you want a simple hands-on activity connected with the local palm tradition.
- Fishing demonstrations: interesting when there is explanation rather than only a photo stop.
- Cooking classes: can turn Cam Thanh into a half-day experience, but check the menu and whether you will cook or mainly watch.
- Cycling: makes sense when you want the countryside journey to be part of the visit, not just transport between hotel and boat pier.
If you are comparing Cam Thanh with other water experiences around Hoi An, use the Hoi An boat tours guide. A coconut-forest basket boat, a Hoai River evening ride and a Cham Islands speedboat are different trips.
Opening hours do not mean every hour feels the same
Hoi An’s 2025 route plan states that basket-boat services operate from 7:00 to 18:00, with Cam Thanh authorities able to suspend the activity when weather is unsuitable. Treat those hours as an operating window, not a promise that every operator, route or bundled activity starts at any time you choose.
Morning and later afternoon are usually easier for travellers who want to avoid the strongest midday heat. Crowd levels, however, can depend on tour-group arrivals, so a quieter route matters more than chasing one supposedly “perfect” clock time.
Compare what the Cam Thanh price actually includes
Cam Thanh products can be sold as an entrance ticket, a basket-boat ride, a private transfer, or a package with cooking, lunch or other activities. Compare the final payable amount and inclusions rather than assuming two products with the same name are equivalent.
| Before paying | What to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket | Whether site admission is included | The advertised boat price may not be the final total |
| Boat | Private or shared, route style and approximate ride time | Two products called “basket boat” can feel very different |
| Performance | Whether spinning is optional or built into the product | Important for children, older travellers and motion sensitivity |
| Transfer | Hoi An hotel, Da Nang hotel or meeting point | A cheap local ticket can become a different cost once transport is added |
| Extras | Cooking, meal, cycling, crafts and demonstrations | Do not pay for a long package if the boat is your only priority |
| Weather policy | Reschedule, refund or replacement activity | Local authorities can stop boat operations for safety |
Families and older travellers need a boarding check

Cam Thanh can work well for a mixed-age group, but “all ages” is too broad to be useful. A traveller who can step down into a low round boat and sit comfortably may enjoy the ride; someone with limited mobility may find the boarding more difficult than the ride itself.
- With young children: confirm operator age rules, suitable life jackets and whether the boat will remain on a normal route without spinning.
- With grandparents: ask about the boarding step, hand support, shade and how long they must sit low in the boat.
- With heat-sensitive travellers: avoid turning the visit into a long midday combination just because several activities are bundled together.
Cooking and meals need a separate dietary check
Cam Thanh cooking products are often designed around Vietnamese dishes and can use fish sauce, meat stock, egg or shared preparation areas. “Vegetarian” does not automatically mean Jain, and a non-pork menu is not proof of halal preparation.
If food is important to the booking, ask for the actual menu before paying and specify vegetarian, Jain or halal requirements in practical terms. For the wider food plan, compare Indian dining in the Da Nang area if you are staying on the Da Nang side of the trip.
Fit Cam Thanh into Hoi An without rushing the day
Only one evening in Hoi An: skip Cam Thanh unless the basket boat is one of your main reasons for visiting. Protect the Old Town and evening instead.
One full Hoi An day: Cam Thanh can work in the morning or early afternoon, followed by the Ancient Town later. Avoid stacking too many village stops before dinner.
Two or three days: this is the easiest fit. Keep Cam Thanh as a countryside half-day and leave the heritage centre for a separate block of time.
Coming from Da Nang: use the Hoi An day-trip guide before adding Cam Thanh. The village is worthwhile when the activity matters to the group, not just because it is on the way.
Tra Que, Thanh Ha and Cam Thanh are all different village experiences. You do not need to combine all three in one day. For the wider activity mix, compare things to do in Hoi An.
Not sure whether Cam Thanh is worth half a day in your route?
Share your dates, hotel base, group size and whether your priority is a quiet boat ride, a lively basket-boat experience or a countryside combination. Add mobility concerns and vegetarian, Jain or halal requirements if they affect the activity or meal.
Go for the route that matches your group
Cam Thanh is more useful when you choose the atmosphere deliberately. The lively routes suit travellers who enjoy performances; quieter routes suit people who want the waterways and palms; longer combinations make sense only when the added cooking, craft or cycling activity is something your group actually wants.
Route allocation, operating hours, ticket structures, weather decisions and package inclusions can change. Confirm the current plan before departure.
