Hoi An Boat Tours: Cham Islands, River Cruises & Basket Boats

Boat ride on the river in Hoi An

“Hoi An boat tour” can mean four very different things. A Cham Islands speedboat uses most of a day and depends heavily on sea conditions. A Hoai River boat is a short Old Town evening activity. A Thu Bon cruise is slower sightseeing, while a Cam Thanh basket boat takes you into the coconut waterways outside the heritage centre.

Choose the format before you compare prices. The cheapest-looking option can still be the wrong one if you wanted an island day and booked a river ride, or if you only had one free evening and reserved a full marine excursion.

Boat ride on the river in Hoi An
Hoi An’s river rides, basket boats and Cham Islands transfers serve different purposes, so compare the time commitment before booking.

Compare the four main boat formats

Most of a dayCham Islands

Choose this when the island, snorkeling or diving is a genuine priority. Sea conditions can change the plan.

Short eveningHoai River

A small-boat ride beside the Ancient Town. It fits around dinner, the night market and an evening walk.

Slower sightseeingThu Bon River

Useful when you want a longer river experience, usually with countryside or sunset rather than island access.

Countryside activityCam Thanh basket boat

A coconut-waterway experience that can be combined with cooking, cycling or village activities.

Cham Islands needs a full-day decision

For a day trip, the speedboat is the practical transfer. Current Vietnam Tourism guidance describes speedboats from Cua Dai taking roughly 25 minutes, while the traditional wooden cargo boat is much slower at around 90 minutes. Schedules and what luggage can be carried should be confirmed for your travel date rather than assumed from an old timetable.

Cham Islands off the coast of Hoi An
The Cham Islands are a separate day-trip decision, not simply a longer version of a Hoi An river ride.

If you mainly want to understand the island, beaches, village and whether a day trip or overnight stay makes sense, use the Cham Islands guide. If the water activity is the main reason for going, use the Cham Islands snorkeling guide or scuba guide.

Do not assume every Cham Islands tour includes the same day

A package may combine a village stop, beach time, lunch and snorkeling, but the order, operating area, equipment and actual water time vary. Compare the product you are buying rather than the words “all-inclusive”.

Hoai River is an evening add-on, not a day tour

Small wooden boats on the Hoai River in Hoi An at night
A Hoai River ride works best as one part of the Old Town evening rather than as the main sightseeing plan.

A small boat on the Hoai River is useful when you already plan to be in the Ancient Town after dark. It can sit between an Old Town walk, dinner and the night market without taking over the evening.

The monthly full-moon Hoi An Lantern Festival is a separate event. Vietnam Tourism notes that the festival is held on the 14th day of the lunar month; you do not need to wait for that date to see lantern-lit streets or take a normal evening boat ride.

Thu Bon works when you want more time on the river

A Thu Bon cruise is a better fit than the short Hoai ride when the river landscape is part of the sightseeing. Routes can move away from the busiest Old Town section toward fishing communities and rural scenery. Hoi An’s identity is closely tied to its waterways, and Vietnam Tourism continues to present boat travel as one way to experience the river town.

Do not assume every sunset cruise includes fishing demonstrations, snacks, drinks or a specific village stop. Those are operator-specific inclusions. If sunset is the reason for booking, also check the departure time close to your date rather than using one year-round clock time.

Cam Thanh is a coconut-waterway experience

Basket boats in the Cam Thanh coconut waterways near Hoi An
Cam Thanh basket boats belong to a countryside visit; they are not a substitute for a Cham Islands sea trip.

At Cam Thanh, the boat itself is part of the village experience. Traditional round basket boats move through the water-coconut channels, and visits are often combined with fishing demonstrations, cooking activities or cycling. Vietnam Tourism includes Cam Thanh and other riverine villages among the ways to explore Hoi An beyond the Ancient Town.

If you want the village in more detail, use the Cam Thanh Coconut Village guide. If you do not want the fast basket-boat spinning that some operators perform, say so before boarding; the ride does not require that element.

Weather affects each boat differently

Cham Islands is the most weather-sensitive choice. Current Vietnam Tourism guidance describes March to September as the calmer access window and October to February as the rougher monsoon period when island access can become difficult. Treat those months as planning context, not a guarantee that a particular day will operate.

River and basket-boat activities are less exposed than the open-sea crossing, but heavy rain, flooding, strong wind or local safety restrictions can still change operations. For the wider seasonal pattern, check the best time to visit Hoi An.

Families and older travellers should compare boarding, not labels

A slower boat is not automatically easier for every traveller. Speedboats can be bumpy in chop, but wooden boats and basket boats can also have steps, low seating or awkward boarding. Ask about the actual boarding point, handrails, seating, life jackets and walking involved before deciding for a child, older traveller or anyone with limited mobility.

  • Young children: confirm the operator’s age policy and suitable flotation rather than assuming every product accepts every age.
  • Motion sickness: open-sea travel to Cham Islands is the format most likely to matter; discuss suitable prevention with a pharmacist or clinician if needed.
  • Limited mobility: ask for photos or a clear description of the boarding setup instead of relying on “accessible” or “family-friendly” as generic labels.

Meals need a separate check for Indian dietary needs

Food is a bigger issue on a half- or full-day island or countryside product than on a short Hoai River ride. A standard lunch may be seafood-heavy, and “vegetarian available” does not automatically cover Jain requirements. A non-pork meal is also not proof of halal preparation.

Confirm the actual menu and preparation constraints before the trip if vegetarian, Jain or halal food affects whether the day works for your group.

Fit the boat into the Hoi An stay

One evening in Hoi An: keep the boat short. A Hoai River ride can sit around dinner and the Old Town without displacing the heritage streets.

One full day: choose between the Ancient Town/countryside and a Cham Islands day. Trying to do both properly usually creates a rushed schedule.

Two or three days: you have room for a river or Cam Thanh experience plus a separate Cham Islands day if the weather cooperates.

Staying in Da Nang: protect the late afternoon and evening if Hoi An is a day trip. Use the Hoi An day-trip guide before adding another half-day activity.

For the wider choice of food, crafts, heritage and countryside activities, compare the things to do in Hoi An rather than adding a boat simply because it appears in a package.

Not sure whether the boat is worth the time in your Central Vietnam route?

Share your dates, hotel base, group size and whether you want an island day, a short evening ride or a countryside activity. Add vegetarian, Jain or halal requirements if the product includes lunch. The boat can then be placed where it fits without compressing the Hoi An and Da Nang days.

Choose the water experience by the day you want

Cham Islands, Hoai River, Thu Bon and Cam Thanh should not compete in one ranking because they solve different travel needs. Start with how much time you have and what you want from the day; then compare the operator, current conditions and inclusions.

Boat schedules, sea access, prices, route details and inclusions can change. Confirm the current operating plan before paying.
