We would stay here when an early cruise departure, late return or Cat Ba connection makes the location convenient. If your priority is restaurants, evening activity and mainland sightseeing, Bai Chay is often the more practical base.
Tuan Chau sits on the western side of the Ha Long urban area and is connected to the mainland by road. Its biggest travel role is the Tuan Chau International Passenger Port, but the island also has hotels, beach areas, entertainment facilities and a ferry connection toward Cat Ba.

Is Tuan Chau the main cruise port for Ha Long Bay?
It is one of the two major passenger gateways, not the only one. This distinction matters because an old hotel description or generic “Ha Long port” label can send you to the wrong side of the city.

- Tuan Chau International Passenger Port on Tuan Chau.
- Ha Long International Cruise Port in the Bai Chay area.

The choice is less about which area is “better” and more about what happens before and after your cruise.
Stay on Tuan Chau when the cruise is the priority
We would consider Tuan Chau when your vessel leaves from the island and you want to remove a morning road transfer. This can be useful for families with luggage, groups using several rooms or anyone arriving in Ha Long the evening before an early check-in.
The trade-off is that the island is more spread out than central Bai Chay. A hotel can look close to the marina on a map while still requiring a vehicle for restaurants or another section of the island. Check the exact hotel-to-terminal distance rather than booking by the word “Tuan Chau” alone.
Stay in Bai Chay when you want more city activity
Bai Chay generally gives easier access to a larger concentration of restaurants, evening activity, mainland attractions and the Ha Long International Cruise Port. If your cruise does not depart from Tuan Chau, moving hotels just to stay on the island usually adds complexity rather than removing it.
What can you do on Tuan Chau apart from boarding a cruise?
There are leisure options, but we would treat them as secondary activities around your transport plan rather than reasons to automatically allocate a full day.
Beach and waterfront time
Tuan Chau has developed beach and waterfront areas. They can be convenient if you are already staying nearby, but do not assume every stretch shown online is a public swimming area or that water conditions are suitable on the day.

Entertainment area
Tuan Chau still has an entertainment complex, and 2026 local records show the venue was recruiting specialist staff for its dolphin programme. What we would not do is plan around old web tables listing fixed dolphin, circus or water-music showtimes.
Schedules, operating days, included attractions and ticket prices can change. If this is important for children, confirm the same-day programme before travelling to the park. This is more reliable than building the afternoon around a timetable copied from a previous season.
Golf and resort facilities
Current Quang Ninh tourism planning continues to position Tuan Chau as a wider resort and tourism zone, including golf and accommodation. These facilities matter mainly when they match your stay style; they are not necessary additions to a standard Ha Long cruise itinerary.
Can you take the ferry from Tuan Chau to Cat Ba?
Yes. The Tuan Chau–Gia Luan route is a transport ferry linking the Ha Long side with northern Cat Ba. It is different from a sightseeing cruise, and its timetable should be checked for your actual date—especially around holidays or weather disruption.

How much time should you allow on Tuan Chau?
- Just boarding a cruise: follow the operator’s reporting time and add a buffer for finding the correct terminal.
- Waiting before or after a cruise: 1–3 hours can be enough for a meal, waterfront walk or nearby stop.
- Beach or entertainment plan: allow half a day only when the current activity schedule justifies it.
- Overnight stay: useful when it removes an awkward early transfer or creates a clean connection to Cat Ba.
