Ha Long Restaurants: How to Choose by Area, Group & Meal Type

Restaurant dining in Ha Long City

The right Ha Long restaurant is usually the one that fits your hotel area, group size, meal type and timing—not the one that appears highest on a generic “best restaurant” list. Bai Chay is convenient for many cruise-and-hotel itineraries; Hồng Gai works better when your hotel, museum visit or other city-side plan already puts you there. For most travellers, there is little value in crossing Ha Long just to compare restaurants.

At Vietnam Story, we would choose the cruise, exact harbour and hotel area first, then place meals around that route. This page is the restaurant decision guide. If you are deciding what local dishes are worth trying, use our Ha Long food guide. If you specifically want Indian food, use our Indian restaurants in Ha Long Bay guide.

Restaurant dining in Ha Long City

Which Ha Long restaurant area fits your route?

AreaBest fitPlanning note
Bai ChayTravellers staying near the main tourist and cruise-hotel zoneUsually the easiest choice if you already have a Bai Chay hotel night or use Ha Long International Cruise Port
Hồng GaiTravellers staying or sightseeing on the city-centre sideUseful when it is already on the route; not automatically “more authentic” than Bai Chay
Ha Long Marina / Hùng ThắngGroups staying in newer hotel and residential areasChoose by actual hotel location rather than treating this as a separate dining destination
Tuan ChauTravellers overnighting close to Tuan Chau harbourKeep dinner close to the confirmed harbour/hotel if the next morning has an early cruise schedule

If you are still deciding where to stay, use our Bai Chay Ha Long guide. If the vessel or port is not yet clear, check the Ha Long harbour guide before fixing a dinner across town.

Seafood restaurant, Vietnamese family restaurant or Indian restaurant?

The useful distinction is the type of meal you need.

  • Seafood restaurant: best when the group deliberately wants a local seafood dinner and is comfortable confirming price by weight or portion.
  • Vietnamese family restaurant: often easier for mixed groups because the menu can include seafood, meat, vegetables, rice, noodles and hotpot.
  • Indian restaurant: usually the easier choice when the group wants familiar food or needs more detailed vegetarian/Jain communication.
  • Hotel or cruise meal: useful when timing matters more than restaurant exploration, especially around early boarding or a late arrival.

For the local-dish decision itself—chả mực, seafood noodles, shellfish and what is actually worth prioritising—use our Ha Long food guide rather than repeating the food list here.

How should you order seafood by weight?

Seafood ordering is where most confusion happens. The problem is not unique to Ha Long: a tank item may be priced per kilogram, per animal, per portion or by a current market price.

Before the seafood goes to the kitchen, confirm:

  • the price and the unit;
  • the weight shown for the item you are buying;
  • whether cleaning, cooking or sauce preparation costs extra;
  • whether the listed price is before or after tax/service charges;
  • what preparation method has been agreed.

For a group, it is also worth confirming the expected portion size. A large fish, crab or shellfish order can easily become far more food than the table needs.

Current restaurant examples: use them as reference points, not rankings

Ha Long has several long-running restaurants with current operations in different parts of the city. We would use named restaurants as reference points, not permanent “best restaurant” rankings.

ExampleArea / styleWhy it may fit
Hồng Hạnh 3Bai Chay; seafood and Vietnamese group diningUseful for travellers already staying in Bai Chay and for larger shared meals
Linh ĐanBai Chay; broad Vietnamese/Asian menuCan suit mixed groups that do not want every dish to be seafood
Hồng Hạnh 1 / 2Hồng Gai sideMore logical when the route already puts you on the Hồng Gai side
Talata SeafoodHồng Hài / city-side seafood diningUseful if you specifically want a seafood meal and this location fits the hotel or sightseeing route

Menus, hours, payment methods and table availability can change. Check the restaurant directly near the travel date, especially for a large group, private room or late dinner.

What should families, groups and seniors check?

For a family or group, the restaurant decision is often more about logistics than cuisine.

  • Group size: confirm whether one table is realistic or whether the group will be split.
  • Children: check whether the menu has simple rice, noodle, soup or non-spicy dishes rather than assuming the whole table wants seafood.
  • Seniors: avoid adding a long transfer solely for dinner after a full cruise day.
  • Mobility: ask about stairs, lifts and drop-off access if anyone in the group needs easier access.
  • Private rooms: confirm in advance if privacy, birthday setup or a quieter meal matters.

If your group has only one mainland night, we would normally choose the restaurant closest to the hotel unless the meal itself is an important part of the itinerary.

Vegetarian, Jain and allergy requirements: confirm the kitchen, not the label

“Vegetarian available” does not automatically mean Jain, Satvik, allergy-safe or zero cross-contact. A seafood-focused restaurant may be able to prepare vegetable and tofu dishes, but that does not tell you how sauces, broth, oil or cooking surfaces are handled.

  • Vegetarian: ask about fish sauce, shrimp paste and meat-based broth.
  • Jain: state the actual restrictions you need, including onion, garlic and root vegetables if applicable.
  • Allergy: communicate the allergen separately and do not treat an allergy as a preference-based request.
  • Strict requirements: an Indian restaurant or a pre-confirmed hotel/cruise arrangement may be easier to control than a busy seafood restaurant.

For mainland Indian dining, use our Indian restaurant guide. For meals on an overnight vessel, use our Indian food on Ha Long Bay cruises guide, because the vessel-specific kitchen arrangement matters more once you are on the water.

Payment and reservation: keep a backup

Payment acceptance varies by restaurant and can change. Some established venues accept cards or digital payment, while others may still prefer local payment methods for particular bills or systems.

We would:

  • ask about accepted payment methods when reserving if the bill may be large;
  • carry some Vietnamese dong as backup;
  • check the final bill against the agreed seafood weight and preparation;
  • avoid relying on a claim that Ha Long is “cashless”.

When should you reserve?

There is no universal “best dinner time” for Ha Long. The useful timing depends on the rest of the route.

SituationWhat we would usually do
Arriving after Hanoi transferChoose a restaurant close to the hotel and avoid a second long transfer
Early cruise next morningEat early enough to protect rest and the next day’s boarding plan
Returning from a day cruiseAllow time for the actual return and hotel transfer before booking dinner
Large family or groupReserve ahead and confirm seating, menu style and dietary requirements
Flexible couple/small groupCurrent availability often matters more than chasing one famous venue

Should you eat at a market instead?

A market and a restaurant solve different needs. Markets are useful for browsing ingredients, packaged specialties and simple food; restaurants are easier when you want a proper seated meal, clearer ordering and more control over group requirements.

If you are choosing between market options across the city, use our Ha Long market guide. If you are based specifically in Bai Chay, use the Bai Chay markets guide.

How Vietnam Story would fit restaurants into the Ha Long itinerary

We would plan in this order:

  1. choose the day cruise or overnight cruise;
  2. confirm the exact vessel and harbour;
  3. choose the hotel area if a mainland night is needed;
  4. identify which meals are already included;
  5. lock any vegetarian, Jain or allergy requirements with the actual supplier;
  6. add the restaurant that best fits the remaining route.

This avoids crossing the city for dinner, duplicating meals already included on the cruise, or discovering too late that a dietary requirement was never confirmed.

Start with our Ha Long Bay cruise guide or browse our Vietnam tour packages. Vietnam Story can then fit seafood, Vietnamese or Indian meals around the actual harbour, hotel and transfer plan rather than forcing the route around a restaurant list.
