Drier-season diving windows

The absolute best time to go scuba diving or snorkeling is during our dry season, from late March to August. This period offers everything you could dream of for a perfect day on the water: calm, flat seas, beautiful sunny weather, and warm, comfortable water temperatures.For the most breathtaking underwater views, the period from mid-May to early September is when the visibility is at its peak. On a good day, you can expect to see clearly for 10 to 25 meters underwater, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of the coral reefs and marine life.

When weather and sea state can cancel or change dives

Vietnamstory strongly advises you to avoid planning a diving trip from October to February. This is our monsoon or wet season. During these months, the islands are often closed to tourists due to rough seas, strong winds, and very poor visibility. The conditions can be dangerous, with strong currents and tides, so most reputable dive operators will not run tours during this time.

• Corals: You will be amazed by the rich variety of both hard and soft corals. Look for the beautiful brain corals, staghorn corals, and the delicate, grape-like soft corals. The dive centers here are very proud of the healthy status of our protected local reefs.
• Fish species: The reefs are a bustling city of colorful tropical fish. You are almost guaranteed to see playful clownfish (like Nemo!) hiding in their anemones, as well as beautiful parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, large schools of snapper, and shy moray eels peeking out from the rocks.
• Larger species: You will also likely encounter larger species like groupers and lionfish. If you are very lucky, you might even have a magical sighting of a graceful sea turtle gliding by.

• Departure: Almost all dive and snorkel tours will offer a convenient hotel pickup in Hoi An (and sometimes from Da Nang for an extra fee) and will transfer you to the Cua Dai Wharf, which is the main departure port.
• Island transport: The main mode of transport for all dive tours is the speedboat, which will get you to the dive sites in a thrilling 20 to 30 minutes.
• Accommodation tip: For the most convenience, it is best to stay in Hoi An. While there are a few simple guesthouses on Cham Island itself, the full-day dive packages that depart from the mainland are generally the preferred and easiest option for most travelers.

Briefing, equipment, surface intervals and booking checks

• A typical day trip: Your day will usually include a hotel pickup, the speedboat transfer, 1 or 2 dives (or snorkeling sessions) at different sites, a delicious traditional Vietnamese seafood lunch served at a restaurant on a beautiful beach (like Bai Chong), and some free time to relax or explore the island before heading back in the afternoon.
• Booking advice: It is a very good idea to book your tour 2-3 days in advance, especially if you are traveling during the peak season (from March to August), as the best operators can get fully booked.
